Team London Bridge are pleased to be working together with TfL, Southwark Council and partners on the consultation for TfL's new traffic management scheme for St Thomas Street in summer 2018. We're committed to putting forward ideas which will support the 'St Thomas Street Boulevard' concept originally outlined in our London Bridge Plan. 

Key aspects of the scheme:

• The road will only allow authorised vehicles, such as those making deliveries and taxi drop-offs
• Traffic should be one-way; from East to West, so that in the future the pavements near King’s College London can be widened. There will be no U-turning near the Shard
• It could be the first 10mph road in London, with traffic signals that prioritise the thousands of people that cross the road on foot over traffic moving quickly through
• A brick-coloured paving material will create a shared-space environment in the area near to Weston Street

Team London Bridge will also be working with an artist to create a new ‘Colourful Crossing’ across the road connecting the station escalator area to the Science Gallery and Guy’s and St Thomas' hospital. Given the amount of development expected over the next 5 years, it will be critical to continue to deliver public realm features that create a distinctive and engaging streetscape.

 

Whilst Team London Bridge are in full support of TfL's current plans, we need to remain focused on the scheme as it takes shape. Areas of concern include the lack of eastbound cycling; preventing deliveries from backing-up; and ensuring that the road does not become dominated by taxis or unauthorised vehicles. St Thomas Street should become an environment where pedestrians feel they can move freely along their routes to and from the station. 

Already there are a number of developments along the street starting to take shape. Team London Bridge will work with the organisations involved to ensure each contributes positively to the boulevard concept. For example, we’ve already seen Capital House present how the Migration Museum could be an exciting new addition to the area via their public exhibition and pop-up gallery.
