London Bridge Station wins prestigious architecture award

London Bridge Station, by Grimshaw for Network Rail, has been named Overall Winner 2018 of this year’s New London Awards.

30 projects have been announced as winners in various categories in this year’s New London Awards at the Guildhall, attended by the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who gave the keynote speech. London Bridge Station also won the the Transport & Infrastructure category and the Sustainability Prize.

The long-running project – one of the most complex and ambitious rail station redevelopments in the UK – was praised for its impressive scale and complexity.

The station is set to accommodate a significant increase in passenger numbers with the addition of three ‘through’ platforms and a grand, spacious concourse. Its impressive scale and unique heritage context have informed the design which complements both its Victorian heritage and newer developments such as The Shard.

Judge David Burney said London Bridge Station is a ‘truly public project’, while Peter Murray described it as an ‘amazing piece of new infrastructure delivered in a complex site, that is transformational for London’.

The redeveloped station also scooped the Sustainability Prize by implementing a thorough sustainability strategy that delivered carbon reductions measures, such as the use of reinforcement steel with 98% recycled content allowing 8,353 tonnes of CO2 saving. In addition, intelligent control escalators reduce energy use during off-peak hours with annual savings of 36.46 tonnes of CO2 and over £9,000 in operational costs.

Other local projects were commended by the judges including The Vertical Village ‘21st Century warehouse space’, Bridge Theatre, Weston Street by Solidspace, One Tower Bridge and the Alex Monroe Workshop on Tower Bridge Road. Southwark Council claimed the Area Master Plan prize for their Old Kent Road plan and also for their Peckham Levels meanwhile space partnership. Huge congratulations to everyone involved.
